Nelson Men's Soccer Finish with Dynamic Draw
Club pays strong avoiding loss, though still searching for first-ever victory
The Nelson Warriors' Men's Soccer team (0-4-3) battled to a heart-pounding 4-4 draw against the Justice Lions on Saturday, September 20, in a back-and-forth thriller that will surely have fans talking about for a long time to come.
From the kickoff, both teams came out with a fiery intensity, relentlessly trading offensive attacks. Justice got on the board first, seizing an early 1-0 lead with a sharp strike that put Nelson's defense on notice. Undaunted, the Warriors responded with firepower of their own. Moments later, Isaiah Galindo leveled the score with a clinical finish – a sign of the high-scoring match that was yet to unfold.
Soon after, Gael Guevara powered through the Lions' backline to net his first goal of the season, giving Nelson a 2-1 lead and energizing the crowd.
Justice, however, refused to back down. Just before halftime, the Lions clawed back with a well-executed goal, tying the game at 2-2 as the teams headed to the locker rooms.
The second half was a rollercoaster of emotions, a heart-pounding spectacle meant for the most die-hard of soccer fans, but not for the faint of heart. Nelson regained the lead when Anthony Berrios, continuing his stellar season, rifled in a goal to make it 3-2. But Justice answered yet again, equalizing at 3-3 with a quick counterattack that exposed a rare lapse in Nelson's defense.
The Jaguars then surged ahead, taking a 4-3 lead late in the match with a strike that seemed poised to seal the Warriors' fate. But, with time running out, the Nelson men proved that no opponent could ever stamp out their warrior spirit, and in the 85th minute, Joemar Valenzuela rose to the occasion, blasting a clutch equalizer past Justice's goalkeeper to knot the score at 4-4, the final score.
The goal ignited his teammates as they hope for one last miracle score, but with teams pushing for a winner in the final moments, the Warriors' defense, anchored by Roberto Bustamante's key saves, held firm to secure the hard-fought point.
