Nelson Men's Soccer Unlucky in Last Minutes
A heart-breaking final three minutes does the Warriors in
The Nelson Warriors' Men's Soccer team (0-5-3) showed grit but ultimately fell 7-4 to the undefeated Mohave College Big Horns (6-0-0) in a high-scoring showdown on the road at Firebird Field in Rotary Park, in Bullhead City, AZ.
The Big Horns came out charging, building a commanding 3-1 lead by halftime with a barrage of early goals that tested Nelson's resolve from the opening kick-off. The Warriors' lone first-half tally came from freshman Pablo Pulido, who slotted home a precise finish assisted by Anthony Berrios, keeping Nelson in the fight despite the deficit.
Undeterred, the Warriors exploded out of the break with renewed energy. Gael Guiverra sparked the comeback, netting the first of his two goals on the night, assisted by Joemar Valenzuela, to pull the Nelson men to within one at 3-2. Moments later, Guiverra struck again, this time with an assist from Pulido, leveling the score at 3-3 and igniting the sidelines with visions of an upset.
Mohave regained the edge with a quick response, pushing ahead 4-3, but Nelson refused to give up the fight. Full of the Warrior spirit, Joemar Valenzuela delivered a clutch equalizer in the 77th minute, assisted by Berrios' second helper of the match, tying the game at 4-4 with just 13 minutes remaining, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
If only the final whistle could have been right then. In an unexpected late flurry, the Big Horns scored three unanswered goals, at the 77:00, 79:00, and 80:00 marks, respectively to seal, and arguably steal, a difficult 7-4 victory to maintain their perfect record.
