Nelson Men's Soccer Winning Streak Snapped
The Warrior men play valiantly in loss
The Nelson Warriors' Men's Soccer team (3-6-3) saw their program-record three-game winning streak come to an end with a tough 5-0 setback against the Eastern Arizona College Fighting Gila Monsters at John Mickelson Field in Thatcher, AZ.
The Fighting Gila Monsters struck early and often, building a commanding lead in the first half with four goals, highlighted with a Samuel Prado goal just 27 seconds into the match, unfortunately putting the Warriors on the defensive from the outset. Despite the Nelson men's best efforts to regroup and create opportunities, generating several promising runs down the flanks, the hosts' backline held firm, denying the Warriors any breakthroughs and ultimately preserving the shutout.
In the second half, Eastern Arizona added a single and final tally at 69:33 to seal the result, capitalizing on set pieces and quick counters while Nelson's defense, led by standout saves from goalkeeper Roberto Bustamante, worked tirelessly to limit the damage. The Warriors showed flashes of their recent form, creating chances through midfield, but in the end could not convert against a stingy Gila Monsters squad.
Though the loss stings, the Nelson men played with the Warrior spirit, embedded in them by head coach Barry Swartz, and are poised to bounce back and finish strong in their debut campaign.
Up next for the Warrior men is at Community Christian College on October 24, the second match in a four-game road trick, before ending their inaugural regular season at home against Bethesda University on November 4, at Christ Church of the Valley in Peoria. Kickoff is at 2pm.
