Lady Warriors Breakup Shutout at OUAZ

The Nelson Lady Warriors' Women's Soccer team continued their quest for the inaugural program's first victory against the Ottawa University Spirit (OUAZ), but ultimately came up short in a challenging matchup on the road, falling 9-1 on Senior Night.

OUAZ tapped into their Senior Night energy, striking first in the 8th minute when Dyanna Mora notched a goal off an assist from Lexy Rowe, for an early 1-0 edge. The hosts kept the pressure on, extending their lead in the 33rd minute as Desiree Dutra found the back of the net, assisted by Diane Garcia. Before the dust could settle on the previous goal, an unfortunate deflected own goal by Nelson pushed the score to 3-0 just two minutes later, where the score would be held through halftime.

The Lady Warriors showed resilience coming out of the break, breaking through early in the second half. In the 54th minute, Lori Wells delivered Nelson's lone goal of the night, assisted by Janessa Lugo, that spoiled the shutout and narrowed the gap to 3-1.

The Spirit, however, once again wasted to time striking back as just one minute later, senior Wendy Macillas on an assist from Maria Juarez, restoring the three-goal cushion at 4-1. Lexy Rowe kept the momentum rolling, scoring in the 66th minute to make it 5-1.

OUAZ's offense exploded late, with Julia Bodelasse taking command by netting back-to-back goals in the 77th and 79th minutes, pushing the lead to 7-1. In that same frenetic 79th minute, Rachel Greksa joined the scoring surge, assisted by Dutra, for an 8-1 advantage. Carranza capped the night in the closing minutes with an unassisted strike, sealing the 9-1 final.

Despite the lopsided result, Nelson's strong play throughout the first half and their quick response in the second showcased the Lady Warriors' growing determination and embodying the Warrior spirit, fueling optimism as they push forward in their debut season.

Next up on Saturday, October 4, will be the first of three straight games against Justice College, the second of the three being the next home game, on October 11.
