Men's Soccer Records Second Straight Victory
Dominates Justice
The Nelson Warriors' Men's Soccer team (2-6-3) kept the momentum rolling, opening up the second-half of their season with their second straight victory, the club's first-ever winning-streak, dominating the Justice Lions 5-1 in a commanding performance at Reach 11 Fields in Phoenix.
The Nelson men unleashed their inner Warrior spirit early, setting an aggressive tone from the outset. Joemar Valenzuela opened the scoring with a sharp finish assisted by Anthony Berrios, firing Nelson ahead to an early lead they would never relinquish. Berrios then turned provider into scorer, netting an unassisted blast to double the advantage and put the Lions on their heels for the early 2-0 gap.
Justice managed to pull one back, slipping in their lone goal to trim the deficit to 2-1, although Nelson's defense clamped down like a vice, refusing to break again, allowing the Lions to just 10 shots total on the night. Offensively, the Warriors countered with a 26-shot bombardment keeping intense pressure on the Lions' goalkeeper throughout.
The offense sealed the deal in style when Parker Linhart took charge, burying the club's next two goals, his first assisted by Berrios' pinpoint delivery, and the second set up by a Gabriel Daniel clever play, to stretch the lead to 4-1. Daniel capped the scoring spree himself, slotting home the final tally on another assist from Berrios, who finished with a game-high three helpers on the night.
The convincing victory highlighted Nelson's growing confidence and balanced attack, as drawn up by head coach Barry Swartz, building both confidence and steam as they face the back-end of the inaugural-season schedule.
Up next for the Warrior men is Community Christian College on October 11.
